A former journalist, Willis Goldbeck entered movies being a screenwriter in the first 1920s. He composed a lot of the “Dr. Kildare” series for MGM, you start with the initial one, Youthful Dr. Kildare (1938), and directed many of them. Although he aimed several more movies after that–including among Burt Lancaster’s more fun early swashbucklers, Ten High Men (1951)–he generally focused on screenwriting, and in the middle-’50s considered making. He retired from movies in 1962.
