Mini Biography

In English films from the 1930s and 1940s, American-born singer Elisabeth Welch produced many memorable guest appearances in cabaret sequences, and starred reverse Paul Robeson in two features. Advanced, glamorous and captivating, her appearances had been a relaxing departure in the stereotype of dark females perpetuated by Hollywood movies of that period. Among her best display screen assignments was Beulah, the nightclub owner and hostess, in Ealing’s Deceased of Evening (1945). After an extended and distinguished profession in Western world End musical movie theater, Elisabeth returned towards the display screen in 1979, producing a unforgettable appearance as “A Goddess” in Derek Jarman’s The Tempest (1979), performing her theme melody, “Stormy Climate”.
