A champion sportsman and trackman in his local northern Australia, Gil Perkins generally wanted to enter films; as an adolescent he virtually went abroad, taking a work being a deck hands on the Norwegian freighter. He ultimately arrived in Hollywood in the later ’20s, through the period of part-silent, part-talkie films, and (because his accent was recognised incorrectly as British) he performed young Englishmen in a few of his first movies. He shortly drifted into stuntwork, frequently doubling cowboy superstar William Boyd and placing a crimson toupee over his very own blond locks to dual ‘Crimson Skelton’, amongst others. A few of his perhaps most obviously stunt jobs had been within the sci-fi/horror field.
