Mini Biography

Herbert We. Leeds was a journeyman film editor before turning movie director in 1937. A lot of his movies were designed for 20th Century-Fox, and his schooling as an editor was apparent in the performance and restricted pacing of his movies. Although he began producing westerns, he shortly considered mysteries and ventures. His battle film, Manila Contacting (1942) had not been the flag-waving, jingoistic propaganda piece regular of that period; while an actions film, it eschewed phony heroics (before last reel, in any case) in its tale of several American military and civilians stuck on Luzon by japan invasion from the Philippines. He also aimed two pleasurable entries within the underrated Lloyd Nolan “Michael Shayne” personal detective series. Unlike many B directors, Leeds’ last movies held up to the same quality as his early types, and his next-to-last picture, Bunco Squad (1950) is certainly, despite its potboiler name, a good, well-crafted and well-acted small thriller.
