Lee Erwin was a theatre organist and composer, and provided music for seventy silent movies, including most of Buster Keaton’s movies, Mary Pickford’s “My Ideal Gal”, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), and Ben-Hur: AN ACCOUNT from the Christ (1925). As a higher school pupil in Huntsville, Alabama, he substituted for the standard organists in two regional theatres. Learning under organist Andre Marchal and composer Nadia Boulanger in Paris during 1930, he came back to Cincinnati, Ohio 2 yrs later to become personnel organist at WLW Radio. From 1943 to 1966 he was an organist and arranger for CBS in NY, using “Moneybags Erwin” over the “Arthur Godfrey Present”, resuming film function a year afterwards.
