Portman entered the film market in 1957, being a trainee in Columbia Images. In 1959 he became a member of the Samuel Goldwyn Studio room being a junior engineer, increasing to the positioning of Helper Supervising Sound Documenting Engineer. In 1970 he became a member of Robert Altman on the Lion’s Gate service, serving as Audio Movie director. He was instrumental in creating a completely new method of re-recording sound and post-ptoduction, and was the initial in Hollywood to ever combine a whole feature by himself.
