Altman became an ensign in August 1981, and completed advanced aircraft teaching, and his Navy wings of platinum, in Feb 1983. He was specified an F-14A Tomcat pilot, and his 1st task was with Fighter Squadron 51, stationed at Naval Air flow Train station Miramar, in NORTH PARK, CA. Altman finished two deployments towards the European Pacific and Indian Sea. (It had been during his period at Miramar that _Best Weapon (1986)_qv was filmed, with Altman showing up as an F-14 pilot in several moments.) In August 1987, he was chosen for Check Pilot College and was the Recognized Graduate in June 1990. After graduation, he spent another two years like a check pilot focusing on numerous F-14 tasks. His next task was with Fighter Squadron 31, that was the very first squadron to field the brand new F-14D. His squadron participated functioning SOUTHERN View over Iraq, and through the deployment he was notified of his selection for the astronaut system. Altman reported towards the Johnson Space Middle in March 1995.
