Billy Daniels toiled obscurely for a long time before learning to be a star in 1950. He started performing in his indigenous Jacksonville, Florida, transferred to Harlem in 1932 and became a dishwasher and afterwards performing waiter at Dickie Wells’ restaurant-club. He toured using the Erskine Hawkins music group circa 1935-36, after that came back to Harlem, which he cherished, and sang just about any day, sometimes simply for meals. He became a staple on regional radio displays, and in 1941 acquired a little record strike on Bluebird, “Diane”/”Penthouse Serenade”. “Diane” became his brand song at this time of his profession, when he sang tenor without appreciable body motion (he is seen at this time as the superstar of Sepia Cinderella (1947)). In 1948 he begun to function completely with pianist-backup vocalist Benny Payne, who also offered as his musical movie director. Mercury Information was his primary label, but before he agreed upon with them he’d made an appearance on Vocalion, Bluebird, Victor (with Phil Moore), Savoy (with Stuff Smith), Decca (Andy Kirk) and Apollo. His film credits are occasionally confused using the dancer-choreographer-actor Billy Daniel.
